Handball is one of the four sports that gets started before the opening ceremony. The indoor sport is traditionally dominated by Europeans, and France will be hoping to sweep in their home Olympics.
The Basics
The modern version of Handball is played on an indoor court measuring 40m x 20m between two teams of seven players each. Players can take up to three steps without dribbling and can hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds. The team with the most goals at the end of the two 30-minute halves wins.
Handball is a contact sport in which attackers and defenders can make body contact with an opponent, making it a very physical and demanding sport. Offensive strategies are even encouraged, as passive play is illegal. Endurance and strength are therefore vital qualities for the players; however, this sport also involves tactics, teamwork, and flexibility, as all players alternate between attack and defense.
The Format
Both men & women use the same format. 12 teams are divided into 2 groups of 6. A round-robin of 5 matches is used to narrow the field from 12 to 8. Top 4 in each group advance to Quarterfinals. After that we have a standard single elimination bracket.
